Bura.. running and little.. Chuma.. watching and learning.. July - August 2008.. CHUMA.. 09.. So, we are back to our normal every day routine :).. Ella and little one are OK.. We gave him name.. , meaning “hero” or “strong person” in Swahilli.. We think it suits him well, as he proved from the beginning that he is fighter, strong spirited and with great will for life.. In the beginning Ella was very confused because of only one puppy.. We think that she knew that there were more of them.. And she is used to take care for some 10 puppies.. Ella directed all love, attention and care that she cumulated for more puppies to only one.. She was constantly cleaning him, she was constantly over him so we had to take her out of whelping box so that little one has some quite time to sleep.. Bura was totally impressed by the puppy and she was helping that puppy had even more attention and less peace :).. So, first few weeks were quite exhausting but now everything is OK and normal.. And BIG THANKS!!! to all known and unknown friends who contacted us by phone or e-mail expressing their interest in Ella and puppy and giving us their support and words of comfort.. It means a lot to us!.. is developing very nicely.. Weather is very nice, warm and sunny, so he can spend a lot of time outside in the garden.. He is very free and playful.. His father.. Wednesday was definitely the hardest day of our lives with dogs.. As of Monday, Ella had all symptoms of normal delivery, she was unsettled, slept for a while, breathed hard, discharged some transparent fluid from vagina.. As of Tuesday, she had some rare and weak contractions.. During the night from Tuesday to Wednesday she had few weak contractions, nothing much.. During Wednesday morning she was very calm, she slept and there were no heavier contractions.. Vet and we started to worry.. We went to the clinic; vet checked her and said that he must make cesarean section immediately.. He was very surprised when he saw that she had torsion of uterus.. Her uterus turned and amniotic cords were also turned.. Only one male puppy was alive, and unfortunately for 4 of them was too late.. They couldn’t save them, reanimation didn’t succeed.. All 4 of them (3 boys and 1 girl) were normally developed.. All ridges were OK, tails were OK and they had just a little white marks.. Ella after operation, puppy had his first milk.. This one male that survived was 590 g on the birth.. He had his first milk while Ella was still under narcosis and on infusion.. When she woke up, she immediately accepted him and started to clean him.. She is really great mum.. Ella is OK now, she has big cut through her stomach.. She has enough milk and little one really likes to eat.. He is great and we can already see that he is very suborned!.. We will never forget our 4 little angels; we are so sorry they left us so early.. Bura Ella with puppy at home.. on 09.. 07.. We are still very sad and shocked, thinking all those “what if …” and “why didn’t we …” questions.. But we must go on and be happy that Ella is OK and that we have this little one in whelping box.. • Title: Yeke Yeke Ridgebacks
Descriptive info: Thanks to Ms.. Sandra Fikes.. from.. KALAHARI RR.. for this text !!!.. INFO.. STANDARD.. RR BOOKS.. RR History.. In 1652, when the South African cape was first settled by white newcomers, they found the local.. Hottentot tribes.. had their own semi-domesticated camp dog - small, prick-eared, curled tail and a ridge of opposite-growing hair on its back.. Although for the next several hundred years this breed interbred with the settler's dogs, the ridge managed to persist through the generations.. Today, we credit three men we credit three men as being mainly responsible for bringing the Rhodesian Ridgeback to where it is today.. They were.. Charles Helm, Cornelius van Rooyen and Francis Barnes.. The Reverend Charles Helm.. , along with his wife and daughter, made the trek from Swellendam, in the Cape, to Hope Fountain in 1875 and took over the mission there.. Along with his family, he brought two ridged bitches, Powder and Lorna.. All travelers to the area stopped to rest at the mission, as there was no other place, and it was here that Reverend Helm became friends with.. van Rooyen.. , the famous lion hunter and game procurer.. Helm's two bitches interbred with van Rooyen's hunting pack, the pups joining his pack and thus spreading the ridge factor.. Unlike van Rooyen and Barnes, the Rev.. Helm's part in establishing the breed was purely accidental, but a fortunate first step for the Rhodesian Ridgeback.. Cornelius Van Rooyen.. photo of Cornelius van Rooyen reproduced with kind permission of the author of Rhodesian Ridgeback Pioneers.. Cornelius Johannes van Rooyen's pack of hunting dogs originally were mixes of various breeds, including Pointers,Irish Terriers,Collies, Bulldog/Greyhound mixes, Deerhound (Greyhound) and Danes.. [These breeds are a quote from research material] We cannot say for sure whether van Rooyen cared if  ...   wife, having imported, bred and shown Pointers, Fox Terriers and Bulldogs.. Barnes was also the co-founder of the Salisbury Kennel Club and a member of the Bulawayo Agriculture Society.. He bred his Ridgebacks under the Eskdale prefix, named for the farm where they lived.. Francis Barnes took the lead in establishing what was basically just a ridged hunting dog to the breed now recognized as the Rhodesian Ridgeback.. For that, we are eternally grateful.. Where did the ridge originate?.. No one knows for sure, but a plausible theory is that tribes living along the west coast had a lively trade with Asian sea-faring people.. They had cattle, goats and sheep of Asian stock and it's conceivable that their dogs and the trader's dogs interbred.. It is thought that the RR and the Thai Ridgeback are both related through an ancestor from the island of Phu Quoc, as both breeds share two genetic traits - ridges and the dermoid sinus.. Ridgebacks were general purpose farm dogs that became reknown because they were especially good at worrying a lion/keeping the lion's attention so that the hunter could get in close enough to shoot the lion.. The rifles, in those early days, were not the powerful guns of today and a hunter had to get quite close to make a kill.. This called for an agile, athletic dog, not a big, heavy, bulky one.. Ridgebacks DO NOT KILL LIONS!!!.. That is NOT THE PURPOSE of the Rhodesian Ridgeback! Obviously, these people had not been to the zoo or watched Nature in a long time.. If they had, they would know that a lioness weighs 300 lbs or better and a male is considerably larger than that.. No dog of any breed could kill nor knock down an adult lion..

HISTORY.. This page is a composite of several pages located on.. Kalahari RRs.. All they know is they ve got to have one! Buying a dog on impulse is always a bad idea! As with buying anything, YOU must educate yourself first: find out what the breed is truly like, visit in the home of several people who have that breed and find out what problems they have encountered.. Learn to ask the correct questions , not only about the positive aspects of a breed but the negative, too.. And learn what questions to ask of the litter owners.. think of it as finding out what the warranty covers and the features of the item.. Ridgebacks are not Labradors or Golden Retrievers in short coats.. They are hunting dogs and have a high prey drive.. Translation: They are quite independent - they don t fawn over your every word, they can be oblivious to being called and require a lot of positive motivation to train them in traditional obedience.. Many people are just not prepared for the stubbornness and hard-headedness in this breed.. Any dog ownership requires responsibility.. Dogs are not something to decorate your home or yard, they are living, feeling creatures who should be treated as members of your family.. This is especially true of Ridgebacks.. They must be made to feel as part of your pack , ie your family, or they will strike out on their own.. You should think of them as a new addition to your family and plan for them as you would a new child.. PLANNING FOR YOUR RR IS ESSENTIAL.. Dogs, especially puppies, will make a big demand on your time.. It takes time to properly feed, train and play with a new puppy.. Just like babies, young puppies are not able to make it through the night and you will have to get up and take them out.. If you work, a new pup might require that you come home at lunch time to let them out or hire a noon time helper to assist you.. Ridgebacks need plenty of exercise to stay happy and healthy.. You'll need to set aside playtime and time for training.. Young puppies need a lot of socialization to be good companions.. A weekly obedience training class and daily practice is a must for your Ridgeback to become a welcome member of the community!.. If this seems like too much for you and your family's schedule, then perhaps this is not the right time to get a Ridgeback.. YOUR RIDGEBACK WILL NEED YOUR PROTECTION.. Ridgebacks naturally want to hunt and have no sense of cars or yard when they go after a squirrel, rabbit or cat.. A fenced yard is important for your dog's safety.. Once a Ridgeback starts after a squirrel or rabbit, nothing short of a six foot wall or fence may stop them.. Dogs allowed to roam are in danger from becoming lost, of being hit by a car or being poisoned.. Your certainly don't want your dog to run away or get lost or killed.. It's also good idea to have your Ridgeback wear an identification tag or, better yet, to have your dog permanently identified with a tattoo or microchip just.. tattoo or microchip just in case he manages to get loose despite your efforts.. And, of course, when he leaves the yard he'll need a leash.. Your Ridgeback must have adequate shelter if he is outdoors while you are away.. Shelters must be cool in the summer and warm in the winter.. RIDGEBACKS GROW TO BE BIG DOGS.. Puppies don't stay little for  ...   them to a lonely life in the yard, on a chain or in a run is cruel and abusive.. Just like children, you have to love and instruct them on proper behavior to have a well adjusted Ridgeback that is a pleasure to be around.. RIDGEBACKS NEED ALL OF THE ABOVE FOR THEIR LIFETIME.. The average life span of most Ridgebacks is ten to twelve years, but some have lived for sixteen years! So, your dog will depend on you for love and care for a long time.. Being a responsible dog owner is an important job and requires your serious commitment.. What are the GOOD points of Ridgebacks?.. Ridgebacks have a short coat, don't shed much and are practically odor free - great for hot climates.. They are quite discriminating in who or what they bark at.. you should ALWAYS go check it out.. They are not fussy eaters and have virtually cast-iron digestive systems.. They love living with people and are generally quiet in the house.. Ridgebacks are intelligent and want to please their owner.. Ridgebacks are easily house-trained.. And, of course, they are the most handsome of dogs!.. The Drawbacks:.. As puppies they have surgical-knife sharp teeth and the jaw power of a Doberman Pinscher.. they should never be allowed to play roughly with humans of any age.. They can do major damage to coffee tables, shoes and anything else they can find to chomp on.. crate training is a must to protect home furnishings while you are not at home.. As juveniles, if left unattended, they can cause your house to self-destruct.. at least, it may appear that way! If left in the yard, they will find things to chew on that you may not even know you own until it ceases working.. A bored Ridgeback is a major disaster waiting to happen.. They are capable of digging ranch-sized holes, biting the limbs off shrubs and ripping up small trees People who love to garden must contend with the fact that their backyards will belong to the dog!.. They are not fussy eaters and have cast-iron stomachs - and you thought this was a good thing -NOT! It also means they will attempt to eat anything that doesn't eat them first.. They are master counter-surfers.. nothing is spared and they are fast.. Ridgeback owners have a tendency to overfeed their dogs, causing gas - not the most pleasant aspect of dog ownership.. Remember a Ridgeback always thinks it s hungry! You have to feed on schedule and stick to your plan.. RRs are people dogs, which means they should be treated as family and not made to live solely alone in the yard, otherwise, you wind up with a big, powerful, pushy creature of your making! An adult RR can clear a 5 foot fence if they want to.. A bored dog is going to look for something to do, even if that means outside your yard.. No one wants to live next door to someone who lets their dog out to eliminate on the neighbors yard, whose dog gets out and kills cats or scares the walkers, joggers and bike riders.. RRs grow to be big dogs and must attended obedience classes with you so he won't become a bad apple and make an ugly impression of the breed on anyone.. Learning to walk on a loose lead at an early age is essential - nobody should be drug around by a big dog.. Ridgebacks are intelligent this too, has been said - what is means is they are fully capable of training you before you can train them.. They are quite clever and can be willfully disobedient.. The earlier the obedience classes the better.. We can t say this enough - A bored Ridgeback can be quite destructive and may develop bad habits of chewing, escaping crate and fencing, barking out of boredom and generally making a pest of themselves.. It is essential that you have the time to put in with them, which can be as simple as having them in the house with you when you are home or spending time making sure they get a good amount of exercise whether outside hiking, training, running or walking with them in safe areas.. Ridgebacks must be introduced to cats and even so, may be aggressive towards strange felines.. Before you get a Ridgeback, please consider the adult size of a Ridgeback and whether you and your family members will be able to properly keep the dog and to train the dog to be a great companion and a good canine citizen..

  • Title: Yeke Yeke Ridgebacks
Descriptive info: FCI standard.. 146.. / 10.. 1996.. / GB.. ORIGIN.. : Southern Africa.. Standard supplied by the Kennel Union of Southern Africa and the Zimbabwe Kennel Club.. DATE OF PUBLICATION OF THE ORIGINAL VALID STANDARD.. : 10.. UTILIZATION.. : The Rhodesian Ridgeback is still used to hunt game in many parts of the world, but is especially prized as watch-dog and family pet.. CLASSIFICATION F.. C.. I.. :.. Group 6 Scenthounds and related breeds.. Section 3 Related breeds.. Without working trial.. BRIEF HISTORICAL SUMMARY.. : The Rhodesian Ridgeback is presently the only registered breed indigenous to southern Africa.. Its forbears can be traced to the Cape Colony of Southern Africa, where they crossed with the early pioneer s dogs and the semi-domesticated, ridged Hottentot hunting dogs.. Hunting mainly in groups of two or three, the original function of the Rhodesian Ridgeback or Lion dog was to track game, especially lion, and, with great agility, keep it at bay until the arrival of the hunter.. The original standard, which was drafted by F.. R.. Barnes, in Bulawayo, Rhodesia, in 1922, was based on that of the Dalmatian and was approved by the South African Kennel Union in 1926.. GENERAL APPEARANCE.. : The Rhodesian Ridgeback should represent a well balanced, strong, muscular, agile and active dog, symmetrical in outline, and capable of great endurance with a fair amount of speed.. The emphasis is on agility, elegance and soundness with no tendency towards massiveness.. The peculiarity of the breed is the ridge on the back, which is formed by the hair growing in the opposite direction to the rest of the coat.. The ridge is the escutcheon of the breed..
